Animal Heads
A direction that came unexpectedly, my collaborations with Zimbabwean painter Charles Nkomo took a left turn in 2014. While working together on the third edition of our collaborative efforts, I was struck by a painting Charles had done of a Buffalo in Africa. The profile and the way the Buffalo was painted was striking to me and I immediately saw the potential for making similar shapes in clay. Having done few sculptural pieces, the idea was to give the animals simplified forms that were suggestive of a certain type of animal. The goal was to keep the lines clean and similar to my vases- although a totally different direction.
