Back Yard Clay

I purchased my farm in 2007. Initially it was a house and barn spaces that would serve as studios immediately after my graduation from Michigan State University.   While gardening in 2012 it became clear the ground had a surprising clay content and by 2013 I began digging and lightly processing my "Back Yard Clay."  Initially met with skepticism, there has been nothing but joy in discovering the quality of the clay, and the amount the farm has. The clay fires to a number of colors depending on the temperature and process.  At higher temperatures it is microwave and dishwasher safe- while at the lower temperatures makes a great Terra Cotta and is even strong enough to be used as a Raku clay.

All digging is done with a shovel and involves extensive manual labor.  It is, however, the way it has been done for thousands of years.  Without electricity even, the Back Yard Clay can be turned from earth to functional and decorative wares.
